So I've taken a deep breath; calmed down a bit since the week long coronation of Barack Obama. I've completely cut MSNBC out of my life as a source of news because all they're capable of is issuing breathless superlatives - and yet, I'm watching MSNBC this Sunday evening because they have an interesting documentary playing.
I start to hit the fast-forward button to get through a commercial, but my finger freezes.
Suddenly there are still photographs of the new president, bathed in light, his head literally haloed like an angel in a Renaissance painting - hugging a baby, a giant figure on stage before throngs of people, his disembodied, airbrushed head with soft eyes and big smile fills the screen - a man half speaking, half whispering, "Barack Obama, the first one hundred days. Get your news here on MSNBC with Chris Matthews, Keith Obermann and Rachel Madow."
This is news? Can't MSNBC even PRETEND to be objective? How can any serious journalist at this network not be completely humiliated by this - this - idolatry. This commercial had Obama all but ascending to heaven to sit at the right hand of God. (That particular footage is probably in the editing can for the Second One Hundred Days.)
What will happen at MSNBC if Mr. Obama royally screws up at some point? And he will. You can't be president for eight years (yes, eight, particularly with this worshipful coverage) and not screw up.
Shot in the dark: We won't be hearing about it on that particular network.
