I will admit that I had a terrible time watching the inauguration on television. For the most part, I avoided it and caught the highlights on late night news.
One thing I found striking was his taking the oath of office. There were the words "...to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America..."
It nearly brought me to tears because I know this man has no intention of doing that at all. His intention is to do everything in his power to subvert important parts of our Constitution. His entire campaign was based on change. He doesn't love America. He wants to change her. He doesn't want people to be strong and independent; he wants them reliant on big government. He doesn't want people working for themselves; he wants them working to build a tax base.
I'm not a brilliant economist - but I have a little commonsense. And my commonsense tells me that most of what he wants to implement, if he lives up to his campaign rhetoric, will be disastrous for America.
Republicans have been a huge disappointment. I heard someone excuse Bush's economic behavior by saying he didn't understand the long term consequences of what he was doing, but was looking for a quick fix. Obama understands very well what he's doing, and the result of the government having its fingers in private sector pies is exactly what he wants. Throw in his, and his party's, desires on immigration and health care, and it's pretty much over for America as we know it.
Here's a news flash: You can't make everyone happy; you can't fix everyone's problems; you can't put a chicken in every pot; you can't pay everyone what they think they're worth. Not everyone is created equal in talent, energy, imagination, intelligence, health or natural ability and government should not attempt to address those inequalities.
What is so hard to understand about the notion that people should obey our laws, and if they are here illegally, they should be asked to leave? If there are jobs to be had, Americans will fill them. Just ask companies that had American workers lined up for blocks after illegal alien raids. Maybe Nancy Pelosi wouldn't take a job in a sausage factory, or picking lettuce; maybe some of the so-called thinkers in D.C. wouldn't line up for those jobs; but don't lay that superiority trip on the rest of America who just might be willing to if given the chance, particularly if the government weren't sending them checks every month.
But I digress. I do not wish Obama well because I don't want him to succeed in his desire to change my country. It changes with every interfering president and every stupid - yes stupid - congressman and senator who goes along to get along and forgets what they have been sent to Washington to do.
With Tom Brokaw in tears and Chris Matthews' legs tingling; with Colin Powell talking about crying for weeks and the discussion of golf, of all things, during the confirmation hearings of the thieves and tax cheats that sailed into their new positions of power and trust in Obama's cabinet, I'm truly heartsick.
I wasn't happy about Bush, but I am absolutely dreading the next eight years and the damage that is going to be inflicted on this country and its inhabitants for generations to come. If it ever does right itself and gets back to being the America it's supposed to be, I won't be around to witness it.
