The coronation of Barack Obama, who has clearly confused himself with Republican Abe Lincoln, hasn't even happened yet and already I'm heartily sick of it and him.
I watched him before his election - but more frequently since his election - intertwine his name with Lincoln's in any imaginative way he can over and over again, as if by saying it enough times, it will be so.
Unfortunately, in the vacuous journalistic times in which we live, he's probably correct. He's carefully honing his image by tossing out test-marketed words, using the wizards of Hollywood to present his image and, now that he's read a book about Lincoln, has decided that's who he wants to be.
I don't think I've ever seen a public official - at least not an American one - so obsessed with emblems, symbols, music and pageantry. It's, frankly, a little tacky to - yes I'm going to say it - pimp out an inauguration like this.
With the downturn in the economy being what it is, one would think he'd have a little more restraint and sense. Lincoln certainly would have. (Perhaps he remembered for a moment that he's really not Abe after all.)
If it weren't so scary, it would be amusing to watch Americans passionately cheering on this man who will probably be the ruin of us.
Obama bumps all around. And another tingle for Chris Matthews' leg.
