I find myself in tears over cruelty to animals. It's beyond comprehension to me how a human being can deliberately inflict pain on innocents who are dependent on us for their well-being and want nothing more than to love and be loved.
I don't have this reaction to cruelty to terrorists. Notice I didn't say 'torture'. There is torture, which John McCain knows all too well. And there is cruelty. By cruelty, I mean sleep deprivation (just ask new mothers), loud music, light 24-hours a day seven-days a week and water boarding.
What? Water boarding?
Every time I hear that referred to as torture, I am amazed. There is a terrible sensation of drowning, but you don't drown. You aren't scarred. There is no pain. Nothing is broken.
Would I want to be subjected to it? Nope. But I'm not blowing people up and I don't have information about cronies who are blowing people up.
I watch the smug politicians and shake my head. If they were in a room with a terrorist who had information that could keep his/her children from being slaughtered, and if they had mere hours to get that information, what would they do? "Gosh, no water boarding, guys. Can't do that. Hey, let's ask him nicely! We'll appeal to his softer side. His RATIONAL side. That always works with fanatics. But for god's sake, NO WATER BOARDING!"
Do they ever think of it from the perspective of people who might lose their families? Does anyone until they're in that moment? Well, Obama, Senators, Congressmen, actors, Europeans and others whose opinions apparently mean more than national security, they might not be your children who have hours to live, but they are someone's children. If it means water boarding a terrorist, then that's what needs to be done.
And if our politicians don't understand the difference between breaking bones and water boarding, they need to develop new career paths.
